This table was supported by two steel I-beams, and heated electrically by what resembled an electric blanket beneath the slates. If you’re looking for the perfect California vacation with all the perks of a Las Vegas resort and none of the Las Vegas hassle, Tachi Palace is the place for you. I was hired by a customer to disassemble his 12 foot Soren-Sogaard Carom Billiard Table, move it to his new home, reassemble and level it, and install new Simonis 360 cloth (which is very thin worsted wool to increase the distance of roll). Modern day Carom Billiard tables are heated from beneath to increase the distance of roll. It is a very popular game in Europe, especially Spain, Switzerland, and Great Britain. To score a point, you hit one of the three balls to carom off either of the other two balls, maintaining sufficient speed to contact 3 rails followed by a successful strike on the third ball. I installed Simonis 860 cloth and it plays very fast! This Newport came with four metal chalk holders and a cue rack identical to the ones in this photo!Ĭarom billiards is very challenging to learn. It has elaborate hand carved etchings in the wood at the base and near the top, and the rails have no shims installed at the pockets - the rails extend further creating a tight pocket (1 1/2 ball width) table. The construction is called bathtub design, because the sides of quarter sawn Tiger Oak are curved and the entire frame is solid, it does not come apart. Brunswick & Balke Company” (indicates it was produced prior to the merger/acquisition of Collender) that is a Newport model built around 1890. I own a Pocket Billiards Table the same model as Mark Twain’s table in his home museum in Hartford, CT, which has a nameplate engraved “J.M. Mark Twain was an expert shooter in both Carom Billiards and Pocket Billiards. Yes, the furthest table in the photo is a no pocket Carom Billiard Table, which is played with just 3 balls, as shown. Are those spitoons by the benches? Those fell out of favor in the aftermath of Spanish Flu so that would put the later range of this image at about 1918. So I have to conclude this might be sheet film but more likley a 120 roll film which was invented 1901 and superseded by 135 in the 30s so between 19. The density of the details doesn't really point to 4x5 but some of the tilt/shift movements seem to suggest it is (out of focus plane at the right of the image, not parallel to lens axis, cue sticks on right in focus and priest in focus) and these were not commonly enlarged. While the enlargement may be cropped, the aspect ratio of the image does not appear to me as 135 film (standard 35 mm roll film) - which was popularized in the mid 30s. However e.g the Pan American exposition in 1901 showcased the feasibility of in-home electric lighting so I don't know if that's an effective way to date this image. as the other chap has said showing electric lights dates it a little bit later than 1907. This is printed on a relatively modern enlarger in a dark room from a negative which the process was invented late 1800s ca. the image appears in the relation of light/shade that is true to life as opposed to a negative image like on "modern" film. By my estimation anything older than 1900 or so would be a wet colloidon, daguerreotype or tintype photograph, either on a polished piece of metal or tin, or glass, and the image would be a "direct positive" i.e.

White rhinos’ large size protects them from savanna predators like lions and cheetahs. Subordinate males put little effort into such communication with scent, always deferring to the dominant male when they meet up. Dominant male rhinos spend much of their time patrolling their territory and marking it with urine and dung, to communicate with neighboring rhinos. A deep, resonant “mmwonk” means that they are content. When startled, high-pitched screams indicate fear. Long and short snorts are used to express anger or alarm. Like other rhinos, white rhinos make a variety of sounds to communicate with others. If successful, a calf is born 15 to 16 months later.īig vocabulary. The male approaches females with a series of breathy “hic-pant” vocalizations, and may rest his chin on her rump to test whether she will tolerate mating. White rhino males can be persistent about courtship, pursuing females for 5 to 20 days. A group of rhinos is known as a “crash.”įemales enter a dominant male’s territory when they are ready to mate. Adult white rhino females are more social, often staying in groups of up to a dozen that include calves and subadults. Neighboring dominant males respect one another’s space and rarely trespass, except to reach water during the dry season. They only allow one or two subordinate males to share the territory. Home turf: Dominant male rhinos occupy small territories. One account says that it comes from the Dutch word wijde, or “wide,” referring to the white rhino’s wide lip or large size. How the white rhino came to be called “white” is uncertain. Their ears can move independently of each other, and one may be cocked forward while the other is directed backward, or both may perk straight up when an interesting sound that requires total concentration is detected.ĭespite their name, white rhinos are gray in color. This defense mechanism has given them an undeserved reputation for having a bad temper. Because rhinos are nearsighted, they often charge when startled. Like other rhinos, white rhinos have a broad chest, thick skin, poor eyesight, and excellent hearing. It is made of keratin, the same material that makes up our fingernails and hair. If a horn breaks off, it can gradually grow back. The outside is rather soft and can be worn down or sharpened after years of use. Rhino horns don’t have a bony core like other mammal horns. White rhinos are identified by the two horns on the end of their nose, with a larger front horn and a small inner horn. simum are more abundant, but still in dire need of assistance if they are to have a secure future on our planet. Demand for their horns had led to rampant poaching and plummeting populations. While large and tough-appearing, white rhino populations are fragile. White rhinos Ceratotherium simum, in particular, are known for their formidable size. The classic vision of an African savanna would be incomplete without rhinoceroses, colossal icons of their grassland homes. Most of the Kings Beach things to do center around this relationship to the lake, but golf is also a draw as is attention to wellness. Winter activities are plentiful too.ĭespite the obvious draw of the royalty-level beach, the name of the town was not based on that accolade. Seeing those bright, sparkling colors explode across the lake is a sight to behold, for sure. As soon as you enter the building there was a huge concession selling food! Every so often you ran into yet another fastfood location. The one rather strange part was all of the various food courts. There are a number of areas where anyone can pet/touch starfish, stingrays, and other such ocean dwelling animals. There was not enough time to see everything in one day and sadly the penguin exhibit will have to wait for another time. With encouragement he did make it across. The two year old was not quite sure and it states that no child can be carried they must walk on their own. There is a suspended bridge, completely enclosed with cargo netting over a pool of sharks. The hippos were very interesting and fun to watch playing with a ball. They even had a beautiful African Grey parrot in an aviary. There are terrariums with spiders, frogs, turtles and such. There are beautiful aquariums with exotic fish - my favorite was the large yellow tropical fish. The name is misleading as the exhibits include all kinds of animals. Recently we took my grandsons to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ. Oh and try and go when the weather is nice so you can stroll the promenade outside and enjoy the great river views. I would have been pretty disappointed if I paid full price for a family of four. Just be sure you have a promo code or some sort of discount coupon. So the $25 stuffed shark I bought doesn’t just help maintain the penguins, it supports a corporate entity. Mind you, the aquarium is no longer a non-profit it’s a for profit venture. You exit their best exhibit through a giant gift shop and along the way there were plenty of professionals willing to take your photo for a fee. Otherwise admission for 4 would gave been more than $100! Inside also turned me off as we passed claw machines, multiple food concessions, dippin dot machines and massage chairs. Luckily they had a promotion going so my two kids were free. What turned me off about AA was the expense. The other exhibits were certainly fine but nothing extraordinary or particularly exotic. Unfortunately, the hippos were not on display but I would imagine them to be the second best attraction. Shark tunnel was very cool and by far the highlight. For more information and tickets, visit is a fairly small aquarium but certainly enjoyable enough. Capacities are limited so advance ticket purchase is required. The event includes more in-depth storytelling around the aquarium’s dozens of sharks from around the world plus guest favorites like touching sharks and crossing Shark Bridge. Shark Summer runs from Friday, May 28 to Sunday, September 12. As part of Shark Summer, guests are invited to submit their name ideas for the young sharks as they welcome them to their new home. Measuring up at about three and a half feet, they’ll ultimately grow up to eight feet long and 200 pounds each. Protecting a vulnerable species like this is so important.”īoth sandbar sharks were born under professional care at Newport Aquarium’s sister aquarium in Camden, NJ in October 2018. “They’re fascinating to watch up-close and give us the opportunity to teach people about the value of sharks. “It’s exciting to present these new sharks to our guests,” said Kelly Sowers, Newport Aquarium’s General Curator. Sandbar shark (Photo from Newport Aquarium) The signature tall dorsal fins on their backs can also be seen cutting through the water’s surface while guests cross over them on Shark Bridge, a 75-foot-long suspension bridge positioned just inches above the water’s surface. They are fast swimmers and guests will find them constantly on the move as they view them from underwater in the Surrounded by Sharks Tunnel. Bringing about feelings ranging from fascination to fear, you can’t help but feel the power of these animals. There’s perhaps no other fish that captures the human imagination like sharks. The all-summer-long event honors and celebrates these fascinating and often misunderstood animals. The sharks arrive as the aquarium is kicking off Shark Summer this Friday. With a lively spirit and quick pace, the new animals are sure to become a favorite of visitors. The two sandbar sharks represent an exciting species that hasn’t been featured at the aquarium in almost eight years. New sharks have arrived at Newport Aquarium. The overall build is very sturdy, and for a larger laptop with a GPU, it’s still relatively lightweight at 4.62 pounds, which is impressive. However, it’s important to note that battery life does suffer significantly when gaming, which is to be expected. Luckily, the 15.6-inch screen runs at 1920 x 1200, so you get some nice graphical quality, and the 500nits of peak brightness means you can use it everywhere. While it has the same 12th gen Intel i7-12700H and 16GB of DDR5 RAM, it also comes with an RTX 3050, a great budget GPU that will let you play most modern AAA games, albeit with reduced graphical settings. If you liked the Dell XPS 13 but feel the screen is too small, the Dell XPS 15 is larger and has some better gaming specs. The Dell XPS desktop also comes with Wi-Fi 6E, so it’s future-proof and will provide you with an excellent connectivity experience. As for storage, it’s pretty massive With a 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD, you’ll have more than enough space for games, files, shows, music, and whatever you want to store. Since the GPU isn’t as powerful, pairing it with budget monitor deals is easy without feeling like you’re losing out. As for gaming, the XPS desktop comes with a GTX 1660 Ti, which is a little dated at this point, but it will still let you game on the most popular free-to-play games like Fortnite and League of Legends. It has the same powerful i7-12700 Intel CPU, and a more impressive 16GB of DDR5 RAM, so you’ll get slightly better productivity and day-to-day experience. You may not realize it, but the Dell XPS lineup is not only laptops but desktop machines as well, and if you’d like something good for work while having some basic gaming capabilities, the XPS desktop is a nice option. As for battery life, it’s very competitive with the MacBook Air, managing to get up to roughly 16 hours depending on your usage and brightness setting, which is impressive. The XPS 13 is also very lightweight, coming in at just 2.59 pounds, so it’s easy to carry everywhere, and the incredible 500nits of peak brightness means you can use it outside even with a lot of sunlight. The 12th gen Intel i7-1250U is an excellent mid-to-high-tier CPU that will easily handle all productivity tasks, and the 8GB of DDR5 RAM is more than enough to run everything smoothly. While not quite as powerful as the MacBook Air, if you want an alternative, the Dell XPS 13 is a great option. The original had inspired a 1984 video game for the Commodore 64 and in the long gap between film entries, games again picked up the slack. But, fittingly, Evil Dead refused to die. The Spin-OffsĪrmy of Darkness underperformed in theaters, stalling any immediate plans for a third sequel. This one turns the humor all the way up for an adventure film that owes as much to Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion spectacles as George Romero. It picks up where Evil Dead II ends, with Ash stranded in medieval England fighting the Deadite threat in the past. That skill is even more crucial to Army of Darkness, the third Evil Dead film, released in 1992. (Instead of an evil book, there’s a Native American burial ground.) But the restless energy that defined Raimi’s subsequent Evil Dead films, and much of the rest of his filmography, is already evident. Woods is predictably crude and some of the elements central to the Evil Dead mythos are absent. Raimi and Campbell had been friends since high school, making Super 8 movies together, building up to their most ambitious project to date: Within the Woods, a horror film about two couples who run into some supernatural trouble while staying at a cabin in the woods. If you’re planning to see the movie, or just want a refresher on one of the longest-running, most purely entertaining pop culture franchises, read on. It’s a fast-paced, unapologetically gross horror film set in a decrepit Los Angeles apartment building, seemingly outside of the universes ofRaimi’s original Evil Dead films and the 2013 remake Evil Dead. But the swooping camera work, splattering blood and chainsaws, and taunting demonic foes add up to an unmistakably Evil Dead movie. Raimi, Campbell, and Tapert’s are all credited as producers on Evil Dead Rise, a major studio release out this weekend. That 32-minute short, made for $1,600 by a couple of Michigan college students and their dropout friend (who was so committed that he sometimes slept with his make-up on to save time and money), laid the groundwork for the Evil Dead franchise, an enduring and ever-expanding web of movies, TV series, comics, and video games. When director Sam Raimi, star Bruce Campbell, and producer Robert Tapert began making a short film called “Within the Woods” at a Michigan farmhouse in 1978, they had no idea they were starting a journey they’d still be on 45 years later. |
