In addition, if you don't buy an alcoholic beverage, the onboard server (Elisabeth) will ignore you. When I balked at this, the so-called conductor (Paul) finally relented and raised our windows so we could see out sans the aforementioned obstructions. They make an announcement telling you not to adjust the windows yourself and to ask for an attendant if you need it (the window) raised/lowed, which we did, only to be chastised for so doing. The windows were partially open, which was good however, the bottom frame was directly in our line of view. The onboard 1st class service also left a lot to be desired. The car we were in was dirty and the cloth swivel chairs were excessively worn and raggedy. We paid extra for the "so-called" 1st class experience which was anything but. Then you must walk along a dirt path for quite some distance to get to the train, which we did. It's in a grass field off a dirt/sand causeway. The parking area at this location is nasty. My wife and I were looking forward to this attraction however, we were sorely disappointed. It's something different and a great way to see the sites while learning a bit more about CT. Even so I would probably do it again, especially with out-of-towners. Considering my husband and I grew bored though I can only imagine how tiresome it could be for little ones. I think a better narrator could make all the difference. The narration on this leg of the journey was lacking and it made the trip seem too long. Bathrooms and a snack bar are on the lower deck as well. The middle and lower decks have open seating. There are three decks and the top deck is completely open-air and wander-friendly. ![]() I was expecting an authentic paddle boat - it's not. The riverboat on the other hand was less charming, though nice enough. It's also worth mentioning that we could occasionally smell the soot from the engine - this didn't bother me but I could see it bothering some people. The only downside was that the narration from the conductor was often difficult to hear over the whistle that blew quite frequently. ![]() Your best bet is to sit on the side that faces the station as it will offer the best views of the river. This car is the only one where alcohol is allowed, and drinks cost about $6 and up, As other reviewers have mentioned, the train ride is quite short, but perfectly enjoyable. We rode "first class" and enjoyed some cocktails from our plush swivel chairs while taking in the sights. My husband and I recently made our first trip to Essex and the steam train/riverboat topped our list of things to do.
